Sheila Bryant’s science teaching philosophy is to make science accessible to all students. She works to remove the stereotype of the “mad scientist” in the lab and replace it with the idea of the scientist as an investigator. She explains to students that when a person studies and learns about phenomena in the world, they too are doing the work of scientists. Building students' stamina to persevere through problems/challenges is another part of growing as a scientist. Her instructional strategies include equity and differentiation in science instruction.
“These science teachers have implemented remarkable science programs, providing high-quality lab experiences for their students with very little resources, often using their own funds,” said Erika Shugart, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer at NSTA. “Now they have the chance to build the lab of their dreams. We commend all of the regional winners for their creativity, resourcefulness and commitment to their students.”
